We designed and developed a program based on the concept of wargaming, which are analytic games that simulate aspects of warfare at the tactical, operational and strategic level. They are used to examine war fighting concepts, train and educate commanders and analysts, explore scenarios and assess how force planning and posture choices affect campaign outcomes.
War games involve the militaries from multiple allies training together to improve a united future potential outcome. We applied this same concept to our client’s leadership development program, with participants representing the various parts of the global organization. We began by analyzing the external environment facing the organization to understand the current realities in today’s VUCA/BANI world utilizing the PESTEL framework. We then deep dove into the organization itself and created both individual business and organizational-wide SWOT analyses and Boston Boxes.
From there, we moved into the wargaming exercise and had the participants, now broken into six small groups, “attack” their own organization to help uncover blind spots in their initial analysis. This unorthodox methodology uncovered various subconscious biases that permeated their initial work. By gaining new perspectives, the participants were now much better equipped to help create a more future-ready organization.
